			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><strong>We work in PR – and soon we’ll be able to tell you exactly what that means</strong></p>
<p>A while back I jokingly joined a <a href="http://www.facebook.com">Facebook</a> group called, “<a href="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=18301490438">I Work in PR and My family and Friends Have No Idea What I Do,</a>” partly out of curiosity, but mostly because it’s true. Chances are the description will strike a chord if you work in the industry:  </p>
<p>“They know we spend all day at an office and that we are very busy, but no one we know understands what it is we do all day. We are equally unable to explain it to them.”</p>
<p>But that’s all about to change, hopefully. </p>
<p>It’s no secret that public relations has a PR problem. Forget the tension with the media (it’s high time to declare a truce and move on&#8230;but that’s another post); I’m talking about the fact that – while a myriad of definitions are floating around – existing descriptions are neither intuitive nor able to encompass PR’s ever-evolving scope of work.</p>
<p><a href="http://perkettprsuasion.com/2012/01/18/pr-definition/pr-definition/" rel="attachment wp-att-4398"><img src="http://perkettprsuasion.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/01/PR-Definition-300x240.jpg" alt="" title="PR Definition" width="300" height="240" class="alignleft size-medium wp-image-4398" /></a><a href="http://www.prsa.org/AboutPRSA/PublicRelationsDefined/">PRSA’s definition of public relations</a> was last updated in 1982. Over the course of the past 10 years, the organization has assembled two special committees to explore modernizing the definition of public relations, but recent discussions, <a href="http://soulati.com/blog/what-is-pr">blog posts</a>, tweets and <a href="http://www.economist.com/node/17722733?story_id=17722733&#038;CFID=151713722&#038;CFTOKEN=36083756">mainstream articles</a> have called for more decisive action. Public relations professionals, having grown tired of lack a de facto industry definition and unhappy with current descriptions, want to both modernize the definition and increase its value.</p>
<p>So late last year the <a href="http://www.prsa.org/">Public Relations Society of America (PRSA)</a> decided to tackle this conundrum with its “<a href="http://prdefinition.prsa.org/index.php/2011/10/30/about-the-prsa-public-relations-defined-initiative/">Public Relations Defined</a>” initiative, setting out to answer the question, “What is public relations?” After collaborating with partners in <a href="http://prdefinition.prsa.org/index.php/2011/10/30/about-the-prsa-public-relations-defined-initiative/#partners">allied associations</a> and calling for open submissions, PRSA unveiled its three definition possibilities this past week: </p>
<p>1. Public relations is the management function of researching, engaging, communicating, and collaborating with stakeholders in an ethical manner to build mutually beneficial relationships and achieve results.<br />
2. Public relations is a strategic communication process that develops and maintains mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their key publics.<br />
3. Public relations is the engagement between organizations and individuals to achieve mutual understanding and realize strategic goals.</p>
<p>We’ve got until January 23 to review, react and comment, and then the collective feedback will be aggregated and analyzed for use in a second <a href="http://prdefinition.prsa.org/index.php/2011/10/30/prsa-definition-of-public-relations-summit/">“Definition of PR” summit</a>. The goal of that meeting will be to produce three final definitions, on which the profession will be invited to vote, and then the final definition is slated to be announced at the <a href="http://prdefinition.prsa.org/index.php/2012/01/10/prsa-public-relations-defined-update/">end of February</a>. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>It&#8217;s that time of year again when we take a day off in the U.S. to breathe a little more, slow down (even if for just one day), think about the blessings in our life and thank those around us who make it better every day. I asked the PerkettPR team what they&#8217;re grateful for this year, and here are some of the answers:</p>
<ul>
<li><em>I’m grateful for great friends, family and food this Thanksgiving – not to mention four days of being able to sleep in (forget those Black Friday lines; I’m thankful for online shopping!) &#8211; Jennifer</em></li>
<li><em>I am thankful for my kids – they are the funniest, smartest, craziest kids I know. They teach me more than I teach them and I am amazed by their generosity, patience, understanding, humor, intelligence and politeness every single day. &#8211; Lisa</em></li>
<li><em>I am thankful to have found such a great group of people to work with; I have been renewed with an overall sense of optimism and positivity. Thank you! &#8211; Vic</em></li>
<li><em>A lot can change in a year and this year especially I am thankful for good health, family, and best friends. &#8211; Johanna</em></li>
<li><em>This has been a rough year, but with the hard times, comes the much needed reminder of all the blessings in my life. <p>From a professional standpoint, I can say that I am most grateful for my team at <a href="http://www.facebook.com/perkettpr">PerkettPR</a>. They get results, and they have a camaraderie that makes our culture what it is &#8211; leaving egos at the door, digging in and working together towards mutual success every day. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<div style="text-align: left;"><img style="float: right; margin-top: 10px; margin-bottom: 10px; margin-left: 10px;" src="http://perkettprsuasion.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/moz-screenshot-1.jpg" alt="" />For one month every four years, the World Cup is broadcast live across the world, including the U.S., where we have been slow to adapt to the sporting phenomenon that has such a huge following in Europe and beyond. But it seems like the enthusiasm this year for the <a href="http://www.fifa.com/">2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa</a> has certainly spiraled &#8211; if the USA-England match on Saturday was any indication – as it was the fifth most-viewed soccer telecast in ABC history. It seemed that the U.S. did get lucky with a tie, but it certainly was fun to watch the game on a rainy Saturday afternoon. </div>
<p>But one thing that has struck me about the World Cup this year is how football, or soccer as we say, has truly become a globally-uniting game. I was not in <a href="http://goal.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/06/11/where-to-watch-the-world-cup-in-new-york-city/">New York City</a> on Saturday, but the quick glimpses the cameras provided of people &#8211; of all ethnicities and ages, packed together on the streets and in bars watching the game &#8211; was incredible. All brought together by a soccer game being played halfway around the world. Even if you are not a soccer fan, I bet that you will tune into at least one game over the next month. It’s a nice change from too much <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/greenhouse/post/2010/06/obama-gulf-oil-spill-echoes-911/1">negative press</a> these days &#8211; sports not only make us feel better but instill a sense of pride, enthusiasm and camaraderie in people &#8211; especially when you see fans from all over the world come together in harmony (even if it is just temporary). </p>
<p>I’ve also noted the use of social media in these games. Joseph Blatter, the president of FIFA, set up a <a href="http://twitter.com/SeppBlatter">Twitter account</a> a few days before the World Cup started and told fans to send him comments and questions about football or FIFA’s work &#8211; and that he would answer as many inquiries as he could. While I am not sure he was ready for the uproar from fans wanting the <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=SeppBlatter">vuvuzela</a> banned from games, he did attach a human face and personality to the World Cup and this is sure to ring well among fans. <a href="http://twitter.com/fifacom">@FIFAcom</a> was also created to bring direct updates from South Africa. The response has been tremendous and it’s fascinating to see how fans are not only coming together in-person but online as well. If you happen to be at work during a game, you can watch the coverage online or you can follow a specific hashtag for your <a href="http://twitter.com/#search?q=%23USA">favorite team</a> to get minute-by-minute, play-by-play updates – it’s almost like you’re at the game! It’s pretty spectacular if you think about how many different ethnicities and time zones are driving these conversations that so many are following.&nbsp; </p>
<p>Lastly, the visibility inside the South African culture provided by the World Cup is really the most important aspect of this event. Less than 20 years ago, South Africa was banned from the World Cup because of <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/06/11/AR2010061102355.html">apartheid</a>, so to see a nation that has bonded together for the better is truly amazing. Even though Nelson Mandela was not able to make the opening ceremony due to the loss of his great-granddaughter, it was clear that South Africans are extremely proud of how far their country has come and were thrilled to host the World Cup games.&nbsp; </p>

We announced some exciting <a href="http://perkettprsuasion.com/2010/02/02/2010-so-far-so-good-at-perkettpr/">agency news</a> recently and today I’d like to introduce you to a PerkettPR benefit that is designed to foster the personal gain that can be found by giving back. Ohio State University football coach, “Woody” Hayes said it best when he said, “You can never pay back; but you can always pay forward.&quot;</p>
<p>PerkettPR employees receive 40 paid hours of community service time a year, in addition to our regular paid time off. 40 paid hours to get out of the office and use our talents, passion and energy to support an initiative that’s important to us! I love it.</p>
<p>Most of us already spend personal time doing volunteer work but when we have busy jobs, families, professional development commitments, etc., it can be hard to find the extra time to contribute where and when we want to. I’m excited to have this opportunity to supplement the work I’m already doing and I hope you’ll be interested in hearing about what we’re all doing with our #CommunityService time <a href="http://perkettprsuasion.com/">here</a> and on <a href="http://twitter.com/#/list/PerkettPR/perkettpr-team">Twitter</a>.</p>
<p>We have found that giving back to our communities makes us better people and provides a sense of accomplishment that is different from what we achieve at the office. How do you strike a balance? Where do you find time to give back? Who supports you?</p>

<p>As a two-time Melanoma survivor the work of the <a href="http://www.melanomafoundationne.org/?page=home">Melanoma Foundation of New England</a> is close to my heart. The programs they support, like the monthly support group I attend, are vital to cancer patients in the region. For the last three years I have volunteered my time and energy to help raise money for the foundation and awareness for our cause.</p>

I will personally be out speaking at high schools and colleges &#8211; sharing my own struggle with Melanoma and encouraging young adults to think about beauty and health as one in the same. Last week I spoke to 50+ female athletes at Wheaton College, my alma mater. As a collegiate lacrosse player, I wanted to convey the life altering events that happen when you go from being an athlete to a patient, facing months of recovering from surgeries where you’ve had tumors and lymph nodes removed. Melanoma is the most common cancer among women aged 25-32. I want these young women to hear my story and see the face of skin cancer – mine and theirs.</p>
<p>People who use tanning beds once a month, before the age of 35, increase their melanoma risk by 75%. This additional 40 hours of paid community service time means that I can speak to more students, educate more young people, and save more lives. I take this advocacy work seriously and I’m proud to say my employer supports me in my mission.</p>

Inspired by the <a href="http://bit.ly/73PQah">&#8220;thankful videos&#8221; posted on Facebook</a> by our client, <a href="http://twitter.com/STLChildrens">St. Louis Children&#8217;s Hospital</a>, we, too, wanted to share what we are thankful for this year. Here are some of the personal and professional things that some of the staff at PerkettPR wanted to share &#8211; how about you?</p>

<p><a href="http://www.nbcam.org/">National Breast Cancer Awareness month</a> is nearing an end. We&#8217;re trying to help raise awareness for the thousands of women who have faced this challenge &#8211; and are fighting much bigger challenges than anything a day at work can throw our way. In particular, we&#8217;d like to call out two of our friends and their efforts to raise money to directly help women facing this relentless disease: <a href="http://twitter.com/designhergal">Jeanne Fitzmaurice</a> of <a href="http://www.designhergals.com/">Design Her Gals</a> and the Gal to Gal Foundation and <a href="http://twitter.com/stales">Alicia Staley</a> of The Staley Foundation.</p>
<p>Both of these amazing women are trying to reach a certain goal this month (today, in Alicia&#8217;s case) to help others. Both have been touched by cancer and are inspirational women who remind us to keep going, never give up and to support each other. <strong>Will you please help our efforts to do so by taking just 15 minutes and $15 (skip two of those Starbuck&#8217;s lattes this week, perhaps?) today to help them reach their goals?</strong></p>

<li>$20 donation = books for patients preparing for surgery!</li>

<p><em><strong>Jeanne Fitzmaurice, Gal to Gal Foundation</strong></em></p>
<p>Jeanne is in her third year of the <a href="https://www.galtogalwalk.org/">Gal to Gal Virtual Walk</a> &#8211; a fun, easy-to-join virtual walk through a different city each day, to help raise funds to grant wishes for stage IV breast cancer patients. Many organizations are dedicated to helping cancer patients during the early stages of diagnosis, but few are focused on stage IV &#8211; Gal to Gal is focused on helping women in this stage to maintain their dignity while receiving treatment through the progression of the disease. Walkers can choose who to &#8220;walk&#8221; with others &#8211; from celebrities like Larry King, Molly Sims and Kristin Chenoweth, to everyday neighbors and friends. You can create teams and invite others to join as well.</p>
<p>This year&#8217;s walk honors Dorit Shapiro, past President of the Gal to Gal Foundation, who lost her brave battle to Stage IV last October at age 38. You can listen to Dorit&#8217;s own story &#8211; in her own words &#8211; in the video below. Dorit spoke about last year&#8217;s Gal to Gal walk, just one week before her passing. We got into the usual topic of social media and how businesses are still learning to adopt it in their communications programs. We also discussed his past life running online communities for businesses and the differences between managing a purpose-built community and navigating a community like Twitter.</p>
<p>I asked the question, will branded online or topic-specific online communities suffer because of the popularity of general communities such as <a href="http://twitter.com/perkettpr">Twitter</a> and <a href="http://www.facebook.com/perkettpr">Facebook</a>? For example, will you still participate in communities built around TV shows like <a href="http://sharetv.org/shows/lost">LOST</a>, life experiences like <a href="http://www.momlogic.com/">motherhood</a>, brands like <a href="http://1000words.kodak.com/">Kodak</a>, or user communities for products such as <a href="http://quickbooksusers.com/">Quickbooks</a> or even <a href="https://community.emc.com/community/connect/ccwelcome">EMC&#8217;s ControlCenter Community</a>? Or has the ability to follow and hold such conversations simultaneously on Twitter taken your attention away from such communities?</p>
<p>Are you more likely to participate in one over the other? Do you get enough of what you need from a brand you admire on their <a href="http://www.facebook.com/search/?q=avelle&amp;init=quick#/avelle?ref=search&amp;sid=716821219.3177049146..1">Facebook fan page (ex: Avelle)</a> or <a href="http://www.twitter.com/jetblue">Twitter account (ex JetBlue)</a>, or will you still join an online community built for their customers? Is there one kind of online community that you prefer over another?</p>
