<p><strong>You have done so much in your career. What role have you enjoyed the most?</strong></p>
<p>I enjoy being an entrepreneur. I love the freedom, the creativity, and especially the variety. I also enjoy being a writer and public speaker because they provide opportunities to share knowledge, motivate, and inspire. For many years, my LinkedIn account has said &#8220;I am the wearer of many colorful hats.&#8221; This is my way of explaining that I can &#8211; and do &#8211; play multiple roles in business. I hate feeling trapped or limited. I fully subscribe to the idea that you&#8217;re &#8220;only limited by your imagination.&#8221; Too many of us try to crowbar ourselves into a single role or very distinct and immutable roles, and then wonder why we are frustrated or dissatisfied. I say break out of predefined roles. Create your own.</p>
<p><strong>You have spoken before about empowering women to be public speakers. What words of wisdom can you share that can help a woman struggling with public speaking?</strong></p>
<p>My efforts to support women as public speakers &#8211; and to be a resource to companies, organizations and conferences to help them find and book more female speakers &#8211; culminated into a group called Chain of Daisies. Every week, we share speaking opportunities, encourage each other to submit proposals to speak, and are sounding boards when we hit obstacles. From this group, I&#8217;ve learned that we all need mentors as we pursue new things &#8211; business mentors are common, but speaking mentors are valuable, too.</p>
<p>Find a mentor, someone whom you&#8217;ve seen speak and whose style you admire. You can also turn to a speaking coach to help you hone your presentation. If you are just starting out, speak often in front of audiences, and start charging right off the bat. Many women tend to speak for free, thinking that is the way to get their foot in the door. I&#8217;ve learned the hard way that each time I agreed to speak for free, the same event organizer was paying my male counterparts. Why? Because they asked to be paid.</p>
<p>And get video. I&#8217;ve been speaking professionally for over 16 years, however, there is very little video available of me speaking, and the footage that is available has poor lighting and sound. My goal for 2012 as a speaker is to make sure I get usable footage of several of my presentations so I can put it up on my website to better demonstrate what I can do. This might mean investing in a professional videographer, but that&#8217;s something that should pay off enormously.</p>
<p><strong>As a mobile app pioneer, what do you envision for the mobile app market in 2012?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;m not really a mobile apps pioneer, but I have been called a Web pioneer for my early work on the Web in the 90s. I tend to find myself at the forefront of where new media is going because I&#8217;m curious and totally enamored with technology. Maybe it&#8217;s my longtime love of science fiction, something that has driven my imagination since I was a little girl.</p>
<p>In 2006, I started providing social media marketing consulting. I began looking toward mobile a couple of years ago while everyone else was all aflutter about social media. I&#8217;m still interested in location-based social networks, QR codes and mobile apps for marketing, and am keeping an eye on the developments in augmented reality.</p>
<p>Folks in my industry tend to think something is &#8220;over&#8221; and the media will hype the &#8220;end of apps,&#8221; and yet the rest of the general public is just catching on. There is plenty of room for adoption growth, plenty of opportunity to participate &#8211; although if you&#8217;re an apps developer, you need to be thinking about an overall business model and not just &#8220;build a couple of cool apps.&#8221; As consumers, our expectation is high, but we also experience a lot of frustration because it is hard to find great apps that become ubiquitous for us.</p>
<p>I think mobile apps are still going to be huge in 2012, as well as hybrid blends of sites and apps, apps and the cloud. With the tremendous growth in the tablet computer market, the demand for great apps will increase as well.  Ultimately, techies and the marketers need to be careful about being too enamored with the next &#8220;big thing,&#8221; and understand the huge shift in the way all of us are consuming information, using products, and purchasing things.</p>
<p>We always have to make sure we take our blinders off and really look around. It is never really about the technology. It is about <em>people</em>.</p>
<p><strong>In your book, Mom Incorporated, you focus on giving advice to women on how to take charge of their work/life balance by starting their own businesses. What are some tips you offer women who are eager to start their own business but are hesitant to do so, due to the shaky economy?</strong></p>
<p>The first tip is &#8220;Stop using the word &#8216;balance.&#8217;&#8221; My co-author Danielle Smith and I like to say that &#8220;balance is a mythical bar that we hold over our own heads, and just when we think we&#8217;re getting close, someone moves the bar.&#8221; There are people who make a living trying to &#8220;teach&#8221; you how to be balanced but the truth is that everything is in flux, and you will always be striving for it yet never obtaining it.</p>
<p>So we use &#8220;juggle.&#8221; As moms with businesses, we juggle. We can&#8217;t be at 100% as a mom or as a business owner at the same time. We have to give ourselves a break, forgive ourselves for not being &#8220;perfect.&#8221; It isn&#8217;t about balance, it isn&#8217;t about perfection, it is about doing our best and having the conversations at home to create the system that works for us. We shouldn&#8217;t judge others, and we shouldn&#8217;t let it bother us when other people judge us.</p>
<p>Regarding the economy, Danielle and I haven&#8217;t encountered many women who are hesitant to start businesses in this economy. In fact, more than ever women are starting businesses from home because of financial motivations. Maybe their husband&#8217;s job was down-sized, maybe they need the extra income. There is no guaranteed job out there, and childcare can be even more challenging when you have smaller children at home.</p>
<p>So I&#8217;d encourage women to reach for business opportunities where they have experience or established leads, to more readily generate revenues that can help support their household. That means if you&#8217;ve been a publicist before and have the skills, start there, then build out your skill set over time to incorporate other services such as copywriting or social media marketing.</p>
<p><strong>What are your favorite apps?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;m an apps fanatic. I&#8217;d divide my apps into utility &#8211; the ones that are useful; social &#8211; the ones that help me publish and share; and entertainment &#8211; the ones that are my little &#8220;escapes.&#8221;</p>
<p>For utility, I use <a title="Google Apps" href="http://www.google.com/apps/intl/en/business/index.html#utm_campaign=en&amp;utm_source=en-ha-na-us-bk&amp;utm_medium=ha&amp;utm_term=google%20APS" target="_blank">Google Apps</a> a lot, including the iPhone app to access my email, calendar and shared documents. I am using <a title="EverNote" href="http://www.evernote.com/" target="_blank">Evernote</a> more and more for everything from taking photos of receipts or whiteboards to voice memos to web clippings. I am also using the Cohuman app to build task lists for each of my projects that I can assign to others and manage from my laptop, iPad or iPhone.</p>
<p>For social, I love <a title="Instagram" href="http://instagram.com/" target="_blank">Instagram</a>, <a title="Twitter" href="http://twitter.com/" target="_blank">Twitter </a>and <a title="FourSquare" href="https://foursquare.com/" target="_blank">Foursquare</a>. I also like <a title="GLMPS" href="http://glmps.com/" target="_blank">GLMPS</a>, <a title="Pinterest" href="http://pinterest.com/" target="_blank">Pinterest</a>, <a title="Foodspotting" href="http://www.foodspotting.com/" target="_blank">Foodspotting</a> and <a title="Trover" href="http://www.trover.com/" target="_blank">Trover</a>. And I access Facebook and Google+ through their respective iPhone apps.</p>
<p>For entertainment, I&#8217;m hooked on Words With Friends, and usually have 15 to 20 games going at once. I also enjoy Drop7, Muddled, Bookworm, and Bejeweled.</p>
<p><strong>Who or what inspires you each day?</strong></p>
<p>I&#8217;m inspired by so many things every day. Being pretty isolated where I live in rural Alaska, I rely heavily on the Internet and <a title="NPR" href="http://www.npr.org/" target="_blank">NPR</a> for my connection to the world, to the voices of interesting people, to stories, and to ideas.</p>
<p>As a mom who struggled to have a baby, and then struggled after pregnancy for several years, I feel like I&#8217;m finally coming into that place of being inspired by my own child. My daughter is 5-years-old now, and the stuff that she thinks about and talks about astounds me. I love her perspective on life, and hope to encourage her creativity, individuality, curiosity. I don&#8217;t want her to ever feel there are limits.</p>
<p>Being able to create and share what I create and to be able to connect with other people is inspiring to me. The Internet opened my eyes in 1987, and literally changed my life in 1992. I am inspired by the world, really. By people all around the world.</p>
<p><strong>What do you have planned next for 2012?</strong></p>
<p>The next part of the line in my LinkedIn profile after &#8221;I am the wearer of many colorful hats&#8221; is: &#8220;I love reinvention.&#8221; Every end-of-year, I go through a personal inventory of what I&#8217;ve done, and what else I hope to do. Then I shift gears, move in new directions, choose different paths. I will still bring some of what I&#8217;ve been doing &#8211; writing, speaking, consulting &#8211; into the New Year, but I&#8217;m really interested in finding new ways to share my knowledge with others in ways that are useful and valuable to them.</p>
<p>As a Sagittarius, I see more travel in my future but will also be more mindful of not being apart from my family as much as I was in 2011. So I&#8217;ll have to be more selective about where I go and why. I&#8217;m definitely going to take more advantage of video conferencing and video in general.</p>
<p>And I&#8217;ve been getting hired more and more to create and lead educational webinars about new media, social media, online marketing, and technology &#8211; so that fits perfectly into my vision of sharing information in new ways. I used to say in the early days of the Web, &#8220;Have modem, will travel.&#8221; Of course, the 2012 version of that is probably &#8220;Have iPhone, iPad, and wifi&#8230;.can travel or work anywhere.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>I’ve been reading and re-reading <a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2008/8/jason-calacanis-on-how-to-get-pr-for-your-startup-fire-your-pr-company">this post</a> by Jason Calacanis from last Thursday, advising companies to fire their PR firms, in order to get PR for their startup. (Note, <a href="http://twitter.com/JasonCalacanis/statuses/895835247">on Twitter</a>, Calacanis claims, “<em>For record, I didn&#8217;t say &#8220;fire your PR firm&#8221; &#8211; Alley Insider added it (although I do think most PR fees are wasted). I don&#8217;t link bait.&#8221;</em> [sic])</p>
<p>As his post is yet another of what seems like a trillion blog posts about how everyone hates PR firms, and I <a href="http://perkettprsuasion.com/2008/08/18/what-is-a-web-20-pr-agency/">just wrote</a> about Arrington’s piece on a similar subject, I wasn’t going to address this one. But Friday evening my employee, <a href="http://twitter.com/fredfunk">Fred Han</a>, implored me that I should have something to say. And I do – as did Fred. Our collective thoughts are below.</p>
<p>First off, as I read the piece I couldn’t help but think what a brilliant marketer Calacanis is. He had some great promotional ideas in this post – advice more likely to resonate with PR executives, ironically, than startup founders and CEOs.</p>
<p>Like Marc Benioff, Madonna, Lindsay Lohan or Paris Hilton, Calacanis knows how to spin his passion, ignite controversy and glean coverage for himself and his company. That being said, my second thought was that his summation of PR, “be amazing, be everywhere, be real,” was at the same time, brilliant and ridiculous.</p>
<p>It’s brilliant because yes, that’s what PR needs to accomplish – being everywhere and being “amazing” enough to stand out in a sea of overhyped, over-funded startups. Ridiculous because a) not everyone is capable of being “amazing,” b) most people hire PR firms because they don’t have time to be everywhere themselves, and c) just because someone is in PR doesn’t mean they aren’t real. To imply that those of us in PR are any less human, sincere or impassioned about our work is insulting and tiresome.</p>
<p>So his advice, while full of gems, is not realistic. As I <a href="http://twitter.com/missusP/statuses/895910039">Twittered myself</a> last week, yes, CEOs could do their own PR. But trust me, most don’t have time for it (not enough to do a good job at it) and most do not have the ego and showmanship that it takes to be as successful as Calacanis has been. Madonna doesn’t have the best voice, Benioff did not create SaaS, Lohan is not the best actress or singer and, well, no one really knows what Hilton does – yet, they are “amazing” because they are brilliant at PR and marketing.</p>
<p>Not to mention that most CEOs are busy doing other things like,<em> oh, running the business</em>. I know Calacanis was too – but he seems to be the exception, not the rule. Most Founders/CEOs could do their own PR, sure – they could also take out their own garbage, book their own appointments, order their own coffee, keep their own books – heck, a lot of them could even fund their own companies. But most don’t. For a variety of reasons, they don’t.</p>
<p>I’ve said it before – <em><strong>PR is not brain surgery</strong></em>. It is a combination of common sense, passion, intuition and awareness. (Just as some athletes play but don&#8217;t excel, not all PR practitioners possess these attributes.) It is also very much about <em>time</em>. The biggest problem with PR is that PR firms try to squeeze higher profit margins by pressuring executives to do as much as possible in as little time as possible – hence the off-target pitches and other seemingly “lazy” tactics. PR practitioners don’t take the time to read enough, relate enough or participate enough because of the pressures from clients and agency leaders around billable time.</p>
<p>Calacanis is on to something by saying PR is “being everywhere, being real and being amazing,” but PR firms – believe it or not – <em>can and do help with this.</em></p>
<p>How, you ask? BS, you say? Fred had some good points along these lines:</p>
<p><strong>1. Be the brand</strong></p>
<p><strong>Calacanis says:</strong> If you look at any of the successful brands out there, chances are their leader is banging the drum: Mark Cuban lives for the Mavs, Kevin Rose lives for Digg, and you can&#8217;t get Loic to shut up about Seesmic. That&#8217;s how it should be. If you don&#8217;t love your brand why should anyone else.</p>
<p><strong>Fred’s take: </strong>CEOs can love their brand but be horrible communicators &#8211; often using every buzzword in the book, yet not really saying anything. They often need help crafting messages and communicating differentiators that anyone can understand.  PR can help identify and articulate messages that enable companies to stand out from the sea of competitive offerings.  Good PR executives add a level of clarity and polish.</p>
<p><em>(Chris’ note: By the way this reminds me that PR, as many have implied, is much more than just media and blogger relations – there’s a whole other blog post pending around this topic!)</em></p>
<p><strong>2. Be Everywhere</strong></p>
<p><strong>Calacanis says:</strong> If you and your team have committed to being the brand, the next step is being committed to being everywhere. Your job is to transfer the enthusiasm you feel for your brand to everyone you meet.</p>
<p><strong>Fred’s take:</strong> Calacanis had a partner to help “hold the fort,” while he acted as a professional socialite.  Many CEOs that I have met do not have this luxury, as they are the sole leader for their organization (at times, the sole employee).</p>
<p>PR helps the CEO “be everywhere” by being the eyes and ears of the organization, reading, researching and evaluating relevant articles, blog posts and content; and bringing the most relevant to the attention of the founder or CEO, with a recommendation on what to do with it – if anything. For example, commenting on a blog post, Twittering, reaching out to a reporter as a resource, etc. Good PR executives also recognize when the CEO or founder needs to be somewhere, and ensures he or she doesn’t miss the opportunity – and likewise, doesn’t waste time on irrelevant initiatives.</p>
<p><em>(Chris’ note: I think these two statements by Calacanis are two different things. Founders/CEOs can always transfer enthusiasm to everyone they meet; many are challenged to be everywhere without some help.)</em></p>
<p><strong>3. Be a human being</strong></p>
<p><strong>Calacanis says:</strong> Journalists hate PR people and they hate being pitched. They do. It&#8217;s just a fact. Journalists and bloggers despise PR people, and if they say otherwise they are lying, placating you or just being diplomatic.</p>
<p>It&#8217;s a much better strategy to just be yourself and develop relationships with people in the industry slowly and organically. If you&#8217;re a good human being who is capable of both listening to people and engaging them in a dialogue then the &#8220;pitch&#8221; will just happen.</p>
<p><strong>Fred’s take: </strong>The team at PerkettPR spends a lot of time establishing solid relationships with the community at large – from reporters and bloggers to business partners, customers, analysts and even relevant vendors. We have worked hard to develop a <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/study-honors-best-best-pr/story.aspx?guid={3202DF11-CFC7-4FD3-8D01-61BC7FE8D6AF}&amp;dist=hppr">good reputation</a> in our field for bringing value to both sides: clients and industry influencers.</p>
<p>Calacanis’ comment, “journalists and bloggers despise PR people,” is a little blind – like any profession, there are some PR executives that give this profession a bad name – unfortunately, this is a common occurrence in many professional services (imagine how big a hit the world of accounting took with the Arthur Andersen scandal) and not exclusive to PR.</p>
<p><strong>4. How a CEO should e-mail a journalist</strong><br />
<strong></strong></p>
<p><strong>Calacanis says: </strong>The best thing for a CEO to do is to stay in regular communication with journalists and bloggers in their own, authentic voice via email…. If you do that once every other day for a year or so you&#8217;ll develop relationships with 50 to 100 important folks.</p>
<p><strong>Fred’s take: </strong>The demanding nature of the CEO’s job makes it hard to communicate regularly with all employees and business partners, let alone journalists.  This is very shortsighted and can only apply to those who have the luxury of being a professional socialite, as mentioned above. At the very least, PR teams can help a CEO stay on top of what each journalist or blogger is writing and what industry trend influencers are saying &#8211; and communicate his or her thoughts in response while, yes, remaining true to the brand. This ties back to several earlier comments around PR as extra eyes and ears, PR is not brain surgery and time is money.</p>
<p><em>(Chris’ note: We also help CEOs get comfortable – despite what Calacanis says, many CEOs freeze up at the thought of talking to a journalist. We help them to realize that bloggers and journalists are just people too – and we give them some of the very advice Calacanis is – mention something personal or comment on their latest article – or, in some cases, realize that the reporter is not into bonding and is all business, and go into the conversation accordingly.)</em></p>
<p>In summary, good PR executives are doing exactly what Jason is suggesting for CEOs and startup founders. We are being ourselves, developing relationships and are capable of both listening and engaging. I’ve built some extremely solid relationships this way through the likes of Twitter, blogs, LinkedIn and more. Granted, too many PR executives haven’t progressed to this way of thinking and are still executing what I like to call “traditional PR.”</p>
<p>Lumping us all into one despised, awful category is getting tiresome. We work hard to “be human” and for the most part, our agency, as an example, seems to “get it.” In Mike Arrington’s post comments, <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/13/the-pr-roadblock-on-the-road-to-blissful-blogging/all-comments/#comments    ">he said </a><em>“Perkett is one of the good guys that I refer to in the last paragraph. When you guys call we pick up the phone. I’m surprised you thought this was aimed at you. Perhaps that sensitivity is what puts you ahead of most of your competitors.”</em></p>
<p>We hope his comment points to the fact that some PR executives <em>do</em> provide significant value. Then again, according to Calacanis, maybe Arrington was just being diplomatic.</p>

		<title>What is a Web. 2.0 PR Agency?</title>

		<description><![CDATA[What does it mean to be a "Web 2.0 PR Agency," anyway? It's really not that complicated.]]></description>
			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There&#8217;s a lot of buzz about PR these days. Is it dead? Has social media taken over? Does everyone do PR now? What&#8217;s wrong with PR? Why is it broken? Is it even necessary anymore?</p>
<p>The latest rant about how PR is broken comes from <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/08/13/the-pr-roadblock-on-the-road-to-blissful-blogging/">Michael Arrington of TechCrunch</a>. I was on vacation when this post appeared so I did not participate in the comments parade (145 and counting!) following his post. But I have to say that I don&#8217;t blame him. Like Mike and his <a href="http://www.micropersuasion.com/2008/08/does-the-thrill.html">post-muse, Steve Rubel,</a> I have recently experienced what it&#8217;s like to receive really bad, really off-focus PR pitches (since I started blogging outside of PerkettPR for <a href="http://thismommygig.org/">This Mommy Gig</a>, <a href="http://blog.womenforhire.com/">Women for Hire</a>, etc.). The pitches I&#8217;ve received have embarrassed me, knowing that these are the professionals representing our industry&#8230; and doing such a bad job that reporters and bloggers are compelled to publicly cry out against PR in general. I don&#8217;t have time to read &#8211; let alone respond to &#8211; lazy, off-topic pitches and I&#8217;m pretty sure that I&#8217;m not even half as busy as guys like Mike.</p>
<p>All of this hoopla &#8211; combined with recent incoming new business inquires where prospects told me they are looking for a &#8220;Web 2.0 PR Agency&#8221; &#8211; has me thinking. Is there a difference between &#8220;traditional PR&#8221; and &#8221; Web 2.0 PR?&#8221; Is PR really broken or are executives under pressures from clients who don&#8217;t understand, now more than ever, what PR is about? What is a Web 2.0 PR Agency, anyway? I think it depends on who you ask.</p>
<p>One prospect defined a &#8220;Web 2.0 PR Agency&#8221; through a series of posts describing the agency as having &#8220;current clients in the Web 2.0 space with funny sounding names&#8221; and the ability to demonstrate &#8220;<span class="denseText">out-of-the-boxiness&#8221; &#8211; preferably by wearing jeans and t-shirts to the pitch meeting and not bringing paper presentations. </span>Numerous other prospects defined Web 2.0 PR as having a blog (you&#8217;d be surprised how many companies haven&#8217;t even taken this step yet). Still others said they were heavily weighing their decision on a new agency around the amount of Twitter followers or Facebook friends each agency had (although, since most agencies don&#8217;t yet have &#8211; or keep up &#8211; a corporate entity like <a href="http://twitter.com/PerkettPR">@PerkettPR</a>, they instead looked at one individual most of the time).</p>
<p>None of the above makes a successful &#8220;Web 2.0 PR Agency.&#8221; You can still abuse Twitter and Facebook if you use them to send bad pitches (or any pitches, in some cases). You can be a savvy PR firm and still wear suits (in fact 99 percent of the time if we showed up in jeans and a t-shirt, we&#8217;d never get the job). You can have thousands of followers on Twitter and not one of them who cares about your clients or their products (hence delivering no value).  Anyone can <em>create</em> a blog.</p>
<p>PR has always been about &#8220;people skills,&#8221; as vague as that sounds. It&#8217;s not only about how many existing relationships you have, but rather about the ability to connect with others in a valuable and meaningful way &#8211; whether we&#8217;ve met or not. It&#8217;s also about mutual benefit and communication &#8211; not just calling when you need something.  And finally, it’s about time – we’re not brain surgeons, but just as you could paint your own house, you most likely have other things you need to do, so you pay someone to do it for you. PR is not dead because everyone wants promotion. Some are good at doing it themselves, some need help and still others simply want to pay someone to do it for them.</p>
<p>A &#8220;Web 2.0 PR Agency&#8221; is simply one that understands the new ways that people are connecting and building relationships. They understand that today, &#8220;people skills,&#8221; go beyond attending networking events or taking a reporter to dinner once in awhile. They take the time to join the conversation, read and comment, share a bit of their own insights and give something back to the community in terms of participation. As Arrington said,<em> &#8220;&#8230; participate in the fascinating conversations [and suddenly] you are a person that gives and takes. Someone who makes the overall network stronger.&#8221;</em> <strong>PR executives <em>can </em>do this as well, if they make the time for it &#8211; think of what you can learn</strong>! In this regard, a good &#8220;Web 2.0 PR Agency&#8221; isn&#8217;t afraid to experiment and take chances – breaking out of the usual PR mold (which clearly isn’t working anymore).</p>
<p>Any &#8220;Web 2.0 PR Agency&#8221; understands that it may take more time to read, comment, write, build and share original content, and provide information &#8211; but that consistent participation is the key to success. You can&#8217;t watch from the sidelines anymore. PR agencies are suffering because they are used to maximizing billable hours by skimming the surface &#8211; they find a basic formula, teach junior executives what it is and apply it to all reporters, analysts, bloggers, etc. They don&#8217;t want to spend hours personalizing efforts for clients when they can service more clients &#8211; hence, more retainers &#8211; if one formula fits all.</p>
<p>This doesn&#8217;t work anymore yet they don&#8217;t know how to change. Managers demand reports of who received a press release, rather than recognizing the value in ongoing conversations and the time it takes to actually read and respond appropriately to individual constituents or to execute direct-to-customer communications. But it isn&#8217;t just agencies, the demand for such reports and lists &#8211; and the failure to recognize value in building relationships through two-way conversations &#8211; also lies with clients. They don’t measure conversations, they measure clips and ask for your Rolodex. Blasting news can quickly create a pretty list of reporters who the firm &#8220;pitched&#8221; and, sadly, can often create more quantity – <em>not quality</em> – &#8220;hits&#8221; than the time it takes to work with a reporter for a feature story or to build a viral campaign.</p>
<p>PR isn&#8217;t dead &#8211; it&#8217;s alive and well in almost anything you read on <a href="http://twitter.com/tw/search/users?q=zappos">Twitter</a>, <a href="http://www.new.facebook.com/s.php?q=style+observer&amp;n=-1&amp;k=400000000010&amp;sf=r&amp;init=q#/pages/the-style-observer/11200776034?ref=s&amp;refurl=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.new.facebook.com%2Fs.php%3Fq%3Dstyle%2Bobserver%26n%3D-1%26k%3D400000000010%26sf%3Dr%26init%3Dq">Facebook</a>, <a href="http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&amp;videoid=40716516&amp;searchid=3e4538c2-07c7-4212-9e16-412a35c40c44">MySpac</a><a href="http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&amp;videoid=40716516&amp;searchid=3e4538c2-07c7-4212-9e16-412a35c40c44">e</a>, <a href="http://www.linkedin.com/answers/technology/e-commerce/TCH_ECM/252661-17581768?searchIdx=1&amp;sik=1213708578066&amp;goback=.asr_1_1213708578066">LinkedIn</a> and more (disclosure: The Style Observer and Constant Contact are clients). Traditional PR (media, speaking, awards, analyst relations, events, etc.) can still be effective &#8211; but in conjunction with these new social channels. I believe a &#8220;Web 2.0 PR Agency&#8221; understands this, has come to grips with the fact that a reusable formula no longer works, takes the time to participate, and is flexible and wise enough to adapt to this reality – and teach clients how to do so as well.</p>

Today, more than ever, the customer takes the brand a company presents and either accepts it or rejects it &#8211; spreading the word or influencing change (as Dell experienced with IdeaStorm).</p>
<p>A huge part of what direction your customers take the brand depends on the company keeping their brand promises. Smart companies recognize this and welcome customer influence by embracing them, conversing with them and inviting collaboration. That means listening and taking action based on customer feedback.</p>

Podcamp co-creator <a href="http://www.christopherspenn.com" title="Christopher S. Penn" target="_blank">Christopher S. Penn</a> recently created a video podcast listing <a href="http://www.podcampboston.org/2008/06/26/how-to-get-the-most-out-of-podcamp-boston-3/" title="How to get the most out of PodCamp Boston 3" target="_blank">5 tips to get the most from your Podcamp experience</a>. His video prompted me to come up with an additional five of my own that first time &#8220;Podcampers&#8221; might find useful.</p>
<p><strong>Create a &#8220;People I want to meet list&#8221;</strong><br />
After <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/nlaspf/tags/podcampboston2/" title="Podcamp Boston 2" target="_blank">Podcamp Boston 2</a> ended last year, I realized there were a bunch of people in attendance that I never got a chance to meet. In fact, so many people attended that I never even knew the people I missed were even there. Plan ahead by scanning the attendee list (Podcamp Boston&#8217;s list is on the <a href="http://podcampboston3-web.eventbrite.com/" title="Podcamp Boston 3 Registration" target="_blank">Eventbrite page</a>) and don&#8217;t miss out on the opportunity to connect with specific people while you can. Many folks come from out of state, which can make meet-ups like this a rare opportunity.</p>
<p><strong>Don&#8217;t forget your business cards</strong><br />
Podcamp is a prime time for networking, so don&#8217;t forget your business cards and be sure to bring plenty of them. Depending on the city, Podcamp weekends can draw hundreds of participants, and all the new people you meet won&#8217;t be able to connect with you later on if you aren&#8217;t handing out cards. Its not uncommon to see people handing out more than one card as well. It&#8217;s also wise to have special cards made up for that blog, podcast or online video show you&#8217;d like to promote!</p>
<p><strong>Maximize your hallway time</strong><br />
Podcamp weekends are always packed full of great sessions, but as many experienced Podcampers will agree, much of the magic happens in the hallways. Spontaneous sessions and unplanned gatherings can yield great information and can be incredibly valuable. If you&#8217;re not getting what you want out of a session, envoke the Pocamp &#8220;Law of Two Feet&#8221; and venture out into the hallway to see what&#8217;s going on. You might just be surprised at what you find!</p>
<p><strong>Bring snacks</strong><br />
Be sure to throw a few snacks in your backpack to keep your energy up throughout the day. Podcamp offers a lot of information to absorb in 48 hours, and you&#8217;ll need to rely on those little bursts of energy that a healthy snack can give you after the coffee crash begins to settle in. Quick and portable items like a banana, trail mix, and a bottle of water will stay fresh during the weekend and the money you save bringing your own snack will pay for that extra pint at the pub on Saturday night.</p>
<p><strong>Check your shyness at the door</strong><br />
Podcamp weekend is a time to meet new people as well as shake hands with some of the people with whom, until now, you might only have had a virtual relationship. If you tend to lean towards the shy side in social situations, then you&#8217;ll take comfort in the fact that everyone who attends Podcamp is there to meet other people. Don&#8217;t hesitate to approach groups of people who you may not know yet. Looking for groups of people that have one or two people you already know can also make breaking the ice easier. Just remember, everyone is there to meet <strong>you</strong>!</p>
<p><strong>Bonus Tip! &#8211; Additional &#8220;gear&#8221; to bring</strong><br />
Here are some additional items to bring along that tend to come in handy: a powerstrip, extension cord, battery chargers, cellphone charger (especially for the iPhone 3G folks!), laptop charger, extra memory cards, USB thumb drive and a sharpie.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>As you may know through my various Tweets, I spoke yesterday at the <a href="http://www.ragan.com">Ragan</a> Corporate Communicators Conference in Chicago with our EVP, Heather Mosley. We substituted at the last minute for another speaker who dropped out unexpectedly. I’m not going to lie, I was nervous coming in as the backup substitute – none of the conference materials had indicated any change in the session until about one hour beforehand, when it was announced at the opening session. It was definitely on our minds that the audience had been expecting some heavy lifters (a much larger, global agency) to discuss digital marketing. I’m not a “digital marketer” and we had only a few days to pull together our presentation. Would we disappoint them? Could we teach them anything new? Would they walk away feeling the session was valuable? What if they already know everything we were talking about?</p>
<p>We changed the subject matter to something more our in line with our expertise, of course. At PerkettPR, we’re enthusiastic about social media and the opportunities – and challenges &#8211; that it presents to the PR profession. Our session was titled, “Join the Conversation: More Effective PR Through Social Media.”</p>
<p>For some, this may seem to be an oxy moron. Many constituents are shouting from the rooftops that PR is dead – <em>due to social media</em>. I completely disagree. I think it’s forcing us to evolve &#8211; but that’s a good thing. Social media presents amazing opportunities for communications professionals to engage with their publics in ways never before possible. For me, it’s thrilling. I am so enthusiastic about social media that I liken it to wanting to jump on the couch like Tom Cruise to emphatically express my love for it.</p>
<p>Yesterday, as we started speaking on this topic, the majority of faces in the room looked at us like we were crazy. <a href="http://www.facebook.com">Facebook</a> for business? <a href="http://www.linkedin.com">Linkedin</a> Answers? Link love on blogs? <a href="http://www.twitter.com/PerkettPR">Twitter</a>-what??? Although, their eyes did light up when Heather explained Twitter like this: <em><strong>It’s like entering a noisy, crowded stadium and saying, ‘Is there a doctor in the house?’… The entire stadium quiets to silence and everyone sits down except for four people that raise their hand and say ‘I can help!’…It’s that powerful and can provide a whole new lifeline of resources to draw from.</strong></em></p>
<p>We had expected that the majority of the room would not yet be embracing social media (luckily, we were right or we could have been really boring). We knew we weren’t going to be in a room full of technology PR professionals. However, I’m also surprised at how many communicators haven’t embraced what is arguably the biggest evolution of our industry in decades…and their reasoning has nothing to do with technology.</p>
<p>Here are some of the questions and objections to social media participation that really stood out for me:</p>
<p>1)    How do you find the time<br />
2)    What do you do if someone says something negative about you in the blogosphere?<br />
3)    How do you get corporate management to let you participate in social media?</p>
<p>I could go on and on about these topics but I’ll try to keep my recommendations simple.</p>
<p>1)    If you don’t find the time I believe you will be out of a job. This is the way communications is going. <em><strong>Participate or be left behind.</strong></em> It’s that simple. Seriously.</p>
<blockquote><p> Okay, okay, I did provide real tips such as: start slowly; join Twitter and observe for a while. Try to go on a few times a day to begin – post a question in the morning. Come back at noon and check for responses in DMs or aggregators like Tweet Scan. Post thank yous/follow up and another question. Come back before the end of your day and repeat. This can take ½ hour total.</p></blockquote>
<p>2)<em><strong>    It depends. </strong></em>Was it a customer? Was it a competitor? Was there any truth to the complaint or comment? There is no one right answer but there are guidelines to keep in mind – transparency and common sense being two of them.</p>
<blockquote><p>We provided a few examples from experiences with our own clients. Two different crisis and two different recommendations: one, a posted apology and two, a personal phone call to the blogger. Different situations that called for different actions. In the end, both were turned around by … participating.</p></blockquote>
<p>3)    My answer for this today is simple – <em><strong>hand them a copy of the new book <a href="http://blogs.forrester.com/charleneli/?gclid=CMTnx9CDmpMCFREaHgod3itkZg">Groundswell </a>by Charlene Li and Josh Bernoff of Forrester Research.</strong></em> (Really, it should be required reading for all marketers, communicators and C-level executives.)</p>
<blockquote><p>Better yet, read it first, highlight the parts that apply to you and the company (and trust me, no matter what industry you are in, there are examples that will apply to you) and put it on every corporate executive’s desk. Include a sticky note with this great quote – one of many – from the book:</p></blockquote>
<blockquote><p><em><strong>“…While you can’t stop it, you can understand it.”</strong></em></p>
<p>And just for good measure – maybe include another of my favorite quotes from <a href="http://twitter.com/charleneli">Charlene Li</a>: <strong><em>“While you cannot control word of mouth, you can influence it.”  </em></strong>Then explain to them that you cannot do either of these things if you are not allowed to participate.</p></blockquote>
<p>I hope we helped some communicators at the conference to begin to understand “it.” Forrester calls it the groundswell. Others call it Web 2.0 and still others the new social landscape. Whatever you call it, it’s here to stay&#8230;so jump in!</p>

You really need to participate in the community to understand its value. But once you do engage, the power of this eclectic community comes shining through.</span></p>
<p>Several of us at PerkettPR have personal Twitter accounts and we also have a corporate entity where we share news, poll the community, post blog entries, track events and more. Twitter has become a fantastic resource for our firm professionally and for many of us, personally. So what have we gleamed from Twitter? Everything from tips on restaurants, travel services, books, technology and more, to new relationships across the globe – including many with like-minded PR professionals – who we’ll call “Frenemies.”</p>
<p>Although we continue to compete for business with many of our Frenemies, we have also united with them in a way we never would have before Twitter. It has provided us the opportunity to see each other beyond the walls of the firms we work for &#8211; to appreciate our industry colleagues&#8217; writing, strategies and accomplishments, and even to commiserate over similar struggles.</p>
<p>Through Twitter, we&#8217;ve had the opportunity to build relationships like never before – not only with other PR and social media professionals, but reporters, bloggers, analysts and others in relevant – and sometimes not-at-all-relevant – industries. Without Twitter, <a target="_blank" href="http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/">Jeremiah Owyang</a> and <a target="_blank" href="http://www.guykawasaki.com/">Guy Kawasaki</a> might never have chatted with us about various topics – professional and personal &#8211; much less visited and mentioned our blog and our website.  </span></p>
<p>Participating in debates about the debates, rallying around a community member fighting breast cancer, supporting the case of a missing child, and even an unexpected death in the community have all been part of our various experiences on Twitter in the last few months alone. We share lively business-related discussions within the community that often extend to each other’s blogs &#8211; sharing ideas, “joining together” on issues such as “the death of PR,” the value of social media or something more personal such as parenting woes. </p>
<p>Twitter has not only helped us to extend our network and knowledge significantly, but provided us with a new avenue to prove that PR executives do have substance and can participate in industry conversations. We have also learned that we have more in common with our competitors than we ever thought possible. They are human, they are smart and we can learn from them. We embrace them as our “frenemies” because we still need to compete – which makes for another interesting future blog post &#8230;  </p>
<p>The relationships may begin on Twitter – but they don&#8217;t end there. We have followed up and met face-to-face with “Followers” from “Twitterverse” at various industry events. Twitter is a great opportunity to expand not only your contacts database but your view of the world. Log on, join the community – we bet you’ll learn something new immediately.</p>

<p>Attending the <a href="http://crunchies.techcrunch.com/recorded-video">Crunchies</a> was a great way to end a very busy work week. Upon arriving at the <a href="http://www.performances.org/theaters/herbst.asp">Herbst Theatre</a> it was clear the bubble was back in full effect (or on its way to bursting, according to the usual cynics and of course the Richter Scales). Though the exuberance was rational, there were some flash signs of the days of old, the folks from <a href="http://www.teslamotors.com/">Tesla Motors</a> had one of their super-spendy electric cars parked out in front of theatre (who said you had to sacrifice sophistication to go green?) and there were massive search lights attracting passers-by and pointing them in the right direction to tech party fun. The camera crews from the local broadcast stations and video bloggers like <a href="http://www.popsnap.net/">PopSnap</a>’s Sarah Myers were circling Michael Arrington, and others, to get some good pre-awards ceremony sound bytes and, of course, the usual party crashers were there too.</span></p>
<p>As with other TechCrunch events, the place was filled with overly enthusiastic students and bloggers, budding entrepreneurs and established CEOs, as well as the marketing and PR folks like us doing their best to network while juggling flashing mobile devices, handshakes and a drink, pre-ceremony. All of us were in the same boat with our thoughts though, hoping to see our company or client take home one of the coveted Crunchie <a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/2008/01/16/crunchies-heres-the-winners-award/">monkey statues</a>, or, at the very least, be entertained on a Friday night &#8212; and that we were. Check out this hilarious (though somewhat vulgar) <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmfP6aXNSis">acceptance speech</a> video from the fake Steve Jobs (Dan Lyons). Apparently no one from Apple was available to attend the ceremony and accept the award so the Crunchies had a great laugh at their expense, and so did the rest of us! Also check out the Cool Whip response from Twine in the first set of video interviews section &#8212; very funny guy. The Richter Scales also had us laughing with their catchy tech party song, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9mWhJU-YdU">Here Comes Another Bubble</a>.</span></p>
<p><a href="http://www.techcrunch.com/">Arrington</a> along with <a href="http://www.gigaom.com/">Om Malik</a> (who courageously still made it on stage 15 days post heart surgery), <a href="http://www.venturebeat.com/">Matt Marshall</a> and <a href="http://www.readwriteweb.com/">Richard MacManus</a> were all gracious hosts and entertaining presenters. The event flowed just as well as any other first-year awards ceremony, with a few hiccups, that Arrington was the first to point out and remedy, (like never, ever leaving the stage empty), and the unscripted “Blogger Bash” panel, moderated by</span><a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=7639">Dan Farber</a>, that was a bit rushed. All in all, that the event was a great success for the four blogs that hosted, all the companies that were nominated, and for those that won the coveted, crazy monkey “Crunchie.” And for the rest of us, the night was a chance to celebrate what a cool and crazy year in tech it has been. It was great to see the tremendous amount of activity that has happened in tech this year culminate in one nicely put together event. Congratulations to all the <a href="http://crunchies.techcrunch.com/2008/01/22/winners/">winners</a>, and look forward to seeing you all at the next big valley celebration sometime soon.</span></p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>With all the do-it-yourself technologies prevalent in today’s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web_2">Web 2.0</a> environment, customer service is very often stripped down to an IM chat or email. Often it’s impossible to get a human on the phone when you most need it, and when you do happen to “catch” a customer service representative, <a href="http://www.crmbuyer.com/story/Outsourcing-to-Far-Away-but-Not-So-Distant-Places-60619.html">cultural barriers</a>, sour attitudes and long processes tend to prevail. Now, more than ever, customer service matters.</p>
<p>One of our clients, <a href="http://www.constantcontact.com/support/index.jsp">Constant Contact,</a> has always recognized this – their entire culture is built around taking care of the customer. Personally, we’ve experienced some great customer service this month from other vendors – and as a small business, it’s great to be treated with the care, respect and importance that is often only reserved for large customers.</p>
<p>Two examples:</p>
<p><a href="http://www.promopeddler.com/"><strong>Promopeddler </strong></a></p>
<p>We had to order a rather large supply of <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/allen074/2038649387/">light up glasses</a> for the TechCrunch Boston MeetUp. We called a vendor we had used before and when we were negotiating some timing/pricing issues, the approach was a threatening “we may be more expensive, but you’ll regret it if you don’t use us” attitude. That doesn’t play well with us, so we tried a new vendor, Promopeddler. Promopeddler won our business due to their sales rep, Laurie. Laurie’s approach was not only that she was grateful for our business but she went above and beyond with her customer service. She was truly the reason they won our business.</p>
<p>Laurie was proactive, persistent and consistent – all the way past the point of the glasses being delivered. She provided extensive contact information, contacted us daily to let us know the status of the rushed order, called us when she thought a color aspect could be better – and provided a recommendation &#8211; and even followed up to ask us how our event was and if the glasses worked out. Our <a href="http://www.constantcontact.com/support/index.jsp">customer experience</a> was so outstanding due to this woman that as long as she’s there, we’ll be a customer. We noticed they made the Inc. 500 “because we give personal service with every order.” Yes &#8211; they really do.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/index.html">Verizon Wireless</a></p>
<p>We had a unique situation to solve with some BlackBerry purchase from Verizon. It required getting on the phone with some customer service representatives, which is not always a very positive experience. However, one customer service representative, Anthony in New York, made all the difference today. He was very clear every step of the way through the process and he was so personable we ended up chatting about baseball and football – and even though he was a dreaded Yankees fan and we are diehard <a href="http://www.redsox.com/">Red Sox</a> fans (most of us, anyway), we felt like a customer that mattered. Anthony made a time consuming process not only bearable but even entertaining – and experiences like that stick with your customers, so they stick with you.</p>
<p>The point here is that yes, the Internet provides a mostly do-it-yourself marketplace and opportunities to communicate without ever saying a word. But positive, helpful and verbal human connections are still important ways to make your brand memorable – and your customers loyal.</p>

<p>The advent of social media has had everyone throwing words around such as transparency, interaction and sharing. But the hoopla this week over <a href="http://news.google.com/news?hl=en&amp;client=firefox-a&amp;rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&amp;hs=73R&amp;q=facebook+beacon&amp;um=1&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;sa=N&amp;tab=wn">Facebook&#8217;s Beacon</a> suggests that the world is not as transparent and willing to share personal information as many business executives had hoped. Apparently the extent of how &#8220;social&#8221; consumers are willing to be is still a mystery to the business world.</p>
<p>In case you&#8217;ve been living under a rock, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/">Facebook </a>announced <a href="http://www.facebook.com/press/releases.php?p=9176">Social Ads</a> earlier this month, as well as the launch of <a href="http://www.facebook.com/press/releases.php?p=9166">Beacon</a>, &#8220;a new way to socially distribute information on Facebook.&#8221; Beacon is &#8220;a core element of the Facebook Ads system for connecting businesses with users and targeting advertising to the audiences they want.&#8221;</p>
<p>With public outcry and <a href="http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=5930262681&amp;ref=nf">petitions galore</a> from Facebook users, the company has backed down a little and is now offering users the option to publish or not publish the information in the “stories” feed. It seems that all the social media fans are not willing to be quite <em>so</em> transparent as having their online shopping behavior become news to their &#8220;friends.&#8221; (<em>Shocker</em>!)</p>
<p>A universal opt-out has been unclear to-date, although <a href="http://www.forrester.com/rb/analyst/charlene_li">Charlene Li</a> of Forrester Research <a href="http://blogs.forrester.com/charleneli/2007/11/facebook-beacon.html">just published </a>official word from Facebook that  &#8220;Adding Beacon-generated stories will require an explicit <strong><em>opt</em><em>-in</em></strong> by the member. Before, if the member did nothing, the story would appear.&#8221;</p>

<p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Tahoma">With the average student-to-counselor ratio in US high schools at 315:1, students could use some additional guidance around which colleges to visit, what questions to ask and even what current students have to say about their experience. But touring campuses takes a good deal of time and money – both the student’s and their parents. <p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: Tahoma">Sunday’s <em>Boston Globe</em> had an interesting <a href="http://www.boston.com/business/globe/articles/2007/09/23/can_tech_survive_a_downturn/?page=2"><span style="color: #800080">article on the tech industry</span></a> and its future among the recession fears.<span>  </span>One interesting note was how some of the “survivors” have been the what-some-might-consider “less sexy” cousins of all the Internet darlings, “<em><span style="color: black">Indeed, the infrastructure and enterprise products scorned by Internet highfliers early in the decade &#8211; from data storage equipment to accounting software &#8211; have become platforms of growth and stability in today&#8217;s technology economy.”</span></em></span></p>
